Bispebjerg Bakke
- a housing development with an entirely unique living experience
29-08-2007

The Vision
Bispebjerg Bakke is a housing development built with the intention of creating an entirely unique living experience - of creating a space for life, joy and comfort based on the philosophy that we as people are strongly influenced by our surrounding environment.

The housing development Bispebjerg Bakke

The idea for the development came about during a meeting between artist Bjørn Nørgaard and the president of the Association of Skilled Craftsmen in Copenhagen. Their shared vision was to create a building with an almost sculptural look, made from good craftsmanship and the best materials.

That vision has now become a reality and the houses on Bispebjerg Bakke billow across the sloping landscape. There are no overtly straight lines to be seen, nor any industrial shortcuts taken. PRIMO mouldings have been incorporated throughout the development. Without compromise, PRIMO has provided features that have helped bring harmony to the rooms.

The buildings
The scrupulous demands on the materials used in the housing development have made Bispebjerg Bakke a challenging project. The starting point was to attempt to use traditional craftsmanship as much as possible. Industrial elements, when employed, are high quality and tailor-made for Bispebjerg Bakke. Decisive to the project has been the belief that traditional materials and craftsmanship impart valuable qualities that the manufacturing industry can benefit and learn from - the manufacturing industry has become a digital craft.

PRIMO supplied the skirting boards for Bispebjerg Bakke. The skirting boards create a transition between floor and wall, closely following the arc of the rounded walls along window thresholds and the large circular design detail around the bathroom - an example of the exciting design and consistent solutions employed throughout the development. In every instance, the curved strips are joined to other straight or curved pieces using individual connecting pieces to add an elegant finishing touch to this exciting project.

The artist
Bjørn Nørgaard is a sculptor, graphic artist and performance artist and was professor at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts from 1985-94. His work has been exhibited internationally and nationally at Louisiana and Denmark’s National Gallery. He is well-known for his “Tapestries for the Queen of Denmark,” which hang in the Great Hall of Christiansborg, and for the paving of Amager Square in Copenhagen.
